True Ballistics: The Medical
Secrets of Gunshot Wounds REVEALED
The Truth about Stopping Power
Are you sure that your weapon can bring down your attacker?
Gun enthusiasts spend a lot of time debating
the pros and cons of their favorite weapon, favorite caliber, and
favorite ammunition. But all these things are academic when you are
in a life-threatening encounter. In that circumstance the most
important thing isn’t what you’re packing, but rather the weapon's
effect on the attacker.
In the life-threatening fight I think you’ll
agree that effectiveness on the target is everything. Does the
bullet put the attacker out of the fight? Do you know if your weapon
and ammunition will be effective? How can you know? Once the fight
starts it is a little too late to find out that your weapon is
ineffective.
Introducing True Ballistics: The Medical
Secrets of Gunshot Wounds.
We a proud to present an exclusive video
presentation that will help you evaluate your weapons and ammunition
and give you the true medical information about bullets and
their effects on the human body. This video features a Chicago
Emergency Physician with years of both medical and firearms
experience. There is a lot of misinformation out there. Don’t get
misled and find that you have an ineffective weapon right when you
need it most.
Who is Your Instructor?
Dr. Richard Urgo is a board-certified
specialist in emergency medicine. He did his residency at the
University of Chicago and has trained and worked in the “knife and
gun club” areas of Chicago. Dr. Urgo has years of first-hand
experience in treating gunshot wounds. He has been a firearms
enthusiast since he started plinking with a .22 rifle at the age of
seven. Dr. Urgo has been a member of the International Wound
Ballistics Association, Doctors for Integrity in Research and Public
Policy and the Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership. He
learned the shooting sports from his father, a 32-year Chicago
Police Department veteran.
How did this Video Come About?
During his ER training Dr. Urgo noted
inconsistencies with what he knew about firearms and was seeing in
the ER and what was being taught in the medical textbooks. He
recognized that much of what was being taught to physicians was
totally incorrect and even some of it politically motivated.
Each
physician-in-training must present at “Senior Grand Rounds” in order
to graduate from the residency. Senior Grand Rounds is a big deal in
medical education. It requires a comprehensive review of the medical
literature and a formal presentation to the attending physicians and
housestaff off the hospital. Without it, you can’t graduate from the
residency. His interest in firearms, self defense, and the shooting
sports led him to choose firearm wound ballistics as the topic of
his senior grand rounds.
Dr. Urgo reviewed hundreds of journal articles
on gunshot wounds, dozens of books on trauma, and every other
resource he could get his hands on. He drew from current military
sources as well as classic texts by authors such as LaGarde. The
research itself took almost two years. When he was done he had
created a comprehensive look at the medical effects of gunshot
wounds and the treatment of them.
What is Covered?
Some of the topics that were covered in that
original presentation were:
- Research Methods in Ballistics
- The mechanisms of wounding
- The effects of velocity and mass on
wounding potential
- Permanent and temporary cavities and their
effects
- The effects of fragmentation
- Kinetic energy and wounding
- Military versus civilian bullets
- Wound infections
- Forensic wound description
- Firearms safety for emergency personnel
- And More
But There is Even More!
The presentation was widely acclaimed by the
audience as the best that they had heard on the topic. A year later
Dr. Urgo was invited to give the same presentation to a large
paramedic convention in Indiana. At that time, he added additional
information on the prehospital treatment of gunshot wounds.
Now, almost ten years later, Dr. Urgo has
consented to pull out the slides and research and make a video of
this classic lecture. This information is still as important as the
day it was first presented, and is even more valuable because he has
added his experiences from the last ten years.
What Will You Learn?
Some of the many questions that are answered in
this informative presentation include:
- Do you know whether the weapon and
ammunition you have will be effective in stopping an attacker?
- What is stopping power? How do you know if
your bullet have it?
- Does a bullet do less damage if it passes
through the target or stops inside?
- How important is velocity in wounding
potential?
- How does the shock wave affect people?

- Do bullets knock people down?
- If you come across a victim do you know
how to preserve the evidence that may convict the assailant?
- Are military assault weapons more
dangerous than civilian weapons?
- Do bullets get sterilized by being fired?
- Should antibiotics be given for gunshot
wounds?
- Should gunshot wounds be sutured?
- Are rifle wounds more serious than handgun
wounds?
- Is it dangerous to leave the bullet in the
patient?
- Can you “shoot to wound?”
- Are exit wounds always smaller than entry
wounds?
- Can you determine the caliber of the
bullet from an x-ray?
And that is just a sample of the valuable
information that is covered. There is way too much information in
the video to list it all. When Dr. Urgo first did this presentation
he had to ask the residency director for more time to fit it all in.
And, since that original presentation he has added even more
information.
